International Rugby Revenues & Reach
North vs South
According to the latest annual reports from some of the world’s strongest rugby nations, the RFU’s total revenues are more than double that of their closest rival: the Fédération Française de Rugby (FFR). Despite the dominance of Southern Hemisphere teams in the Rugby World Cup 2015, 4 out of the top 5 revenue generating Rugby Unions are in the Northern Hemisphere.
Wales, who have generated €91m (£64m) between July 1st 2014 and June 30th 2015, have the highest revenue per capita (€29) of any national rugby union. As mentioned in our recent RWC Insider, 44% of the Welsh population regard themselves as “rugby supporters”, and 23% regard themselves as “rugby lovers.”
Despite New Zealand’s small population, the All Black’s international success and recognition means that it is the most far reaching national rugby union brand on social media. The IRFU has the third largest social media following as a percentage of the combined populations of the Republic and Northern Ireland, illustrating the power of the Irish diaspora abroad. According to Social Bakers, only 43.3% of Irish Rugby’s Facebook followers are from Ireland.
